Digital solutions for cleaner environment, better health and accessibility for all were the three ideas nominated for the EU Digitalisation for Civil Society Award by participants and mentors at the 2019 EaP Civil Society Hackathon, which took place on 14-16 Junein the Georgian capital of Tbilisi.
Civil society activists, information technology (IT) professionals and designers from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine presented 20 ideas at the Hackathon.
For three days, technical and subject-matter experts worked together on IT solutions that will enable civil society organisations and activists to better serve the needs of their communities and help citizens of the Eastern Neighbourhood region to participate in decision making.
Olga Tereshchenko, from the Ukrainian city of Odesa, is one of the nominees. She came to the Hackathon with an idea for a tool that would collect complete and verified data on gluten-free drugs, products and services.
The second nominee, Anna Krys, who is also from Ukraine, is concerned about accessibility infrastructure for people with disabilities and the lack of information for such individuals about opportunities they can use to enjoy life to its fullest.
Polina Pliskovskaya, from Minsk, Belarus is the third nominee. She proposed an idea to solve the problem of separate waste collection with RUBBISH, an online game to teach children how to care about the environment and deal with waste sorting responsibly.
One of these three projects will receive support from the EU to be fully developed and launched. The winner will be announced in August2019.
The 2019 EaP Civil Society Hackathon is being organised by the EU’s Eastern Partnership Civil Society Facility for the third time.
