Tech women ambassadors – new initiative to inspire girls and women to pursue career in IT
Date: 11/11/19
A new initiative has been launched in Moldova to encourage women to pursue careers in IT.
The ‘Tech Women Ambassadors’ programme is led by the Tekwill project and the Tech Women Community, and is designed to enhance and facilitate the transfer of knowledge, motivation and experience between Information Technology professionals, but also to inspire and encourage the aspirations of women and girls, who want to embrace a career in this industry.
The programme will include informal monthly events, conferences, socialising sessions, career guidance, mentoring, exchange of experience and other meetings open to all those who wish to know, explore and capitalise on professional opportunities in IT.
All the planned actions will be organised and moderated by the Tech Women Ambassadors, a role given to 11 IT professionals selected through a public competition. The selected candidates represent various fields of activity throughout the industry and were noted for their achievements, but also for their active involvement in initiatives for empowering women in the IT sector.
In the Republic of Moldova, women represent 17-18% of the total number of people employed in IT, 5% fewer than in Romania and Bulgaria. A study by the European Commission shows that encouraging women to access ICT employment opportunities could lead to an annual growth of EU GDP of around €9 billion, which confirms the significant contribution they could have to sustainable economic growth and improvedliving conditions.
The actions under the ‘Tech Women Ambassadors’ programme will be carried out with the support of the United States Agency for International Development and the Government of Swedenas part of the Project ‘Development of the Tekwill Centreof Excellence in the ICT Sector’, implemented by the National Association of ICT Companies. The initiatives will be addressed to all women in IT and young people who are already in the field or intend to access it.
The ‘Tech Women’platform is an initiative dedicated to attracting, supporting and promoting women in ICT.
Under its ICT Innovation stream, the EU4Digital initiative will conduct actions to encourage women to study ICT related subjects and to start their own innovative businesses.
