Six thousand digital devices for Ukrainian schoolchildren donated by Amazon
Date: 05/04/24
As part of the European Commission-backed ‘Laptops for Ukraine’ project, Ukraine has received 4,950 digital devices from Amazon, including tablets and e-books. An additional 700 devices from the company are expected to arrive soon as part of the ‘Device Coalition’ initiative.
The devices will be distributed across ten regions where education is conducted through a blend of in-person and distance learning. Priority for distribution will be given to students in regions like Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson and Donetsk, where education takes place entirely online.
Supporting Ukraine with digital technology
In 2023, Amazon joined ‘Laptops for Ukraine’, a project initiated by Digital Europe, the Ministry of Digital Affairs and the European Commission. The objective is to equip schools and hospitals with high-quality tools for internet access.
In January 2024, the Ministry of Digital Transformation, Ministry of Education and Science, and the Olena Zelenska Foundation inaugurated the Device Coalition. This collaborative effort aims to bring together organisations, businesses, governments and patrons to supply Ukrainian students and teachers with essential equipment. To date, over 50,000 devices for children’s education have been gathered through international partnerships.
The safety of children is our top priority. But beyond safety, we want to give them a future, opportunities and prospects. So while our defenders are fighting at the frontline, among other things, for children to be able to go to school freely, we must at least provide the possibility of distance education, despite the war.
