New Moldovan platform aids food recovery and redistribution, reduces waste
Date: 14/11/23
The Food Bank of Moldova with the assistance of the European Union unveiled the online platform Donezalimente.mdon 14 November 2023. The platform represents an innovative digital project to reduce food waste by streamlining the process of recovering food from economic agents in the agri-food chain and redistributing it to social canteens and other social services.
The Donezalimente.md platform was created to connect those in need with those who can offer support. The goal is to contribute to a more equitable and inclusive society, and to create a culture of solidarity to reduce food waste. The European Union supports the Food Bank’s activity because it promotes respect for food, as well as the value of those who grow, prepare, and distribute food.
The Donezalimente.md platform was developed within the project ‘Partnerships for inclusive and sustainable social canteen services’ funded by the European Union. It is co-financed and implemented by the non-governmental organisation Keystone Moldova, aid organisation Concordia Social Projects, and philanthropic organisation Diaconia. The project aims to contribute to the development of social canteen services in Moldova and improve the food recovery mechanism.
The Food Bank – Banca de Alimente – is responsible for managing the Donezalimente.md platform, which will operate according to the following mechanism:
Economic agents in the agri-food chain register on the platform as donors of food products, specifying the quantity, type and location of the available stocks.
Social services register on the platform as beneficiaries of the Food Bank.
The Food Bank team facilitates the connection between food donors and social services.
The social services directly take available stock from the donor, without the need for it to first reach the Food Bank’s warehouse.
Further information
Over the past year of receiving support from the European Union, the Food Bank of Moldova has recovered approximately 90 tons of food, which have been distributed to 39 social services. More than 5000 individuals have benefitted from the recovered food products to date.
