Registration open: House of Europe ‘Hatathon’ on digitalising cultural heritage
Museum and library staff, cultural workers, arts managers, tech specialists, Web developers and designers, creative entrepreneurs and anyone eager to share ideas and expertise are invited to participate in ‘Hatathon 5.0’ on 21–27 May 2024. This online ideathon and training programme gathers specialists and activists to generate new approaches and tools for digitalising, documenting and preserving the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of Ukraine.

EU Advisory Mission supports Ukrainian prosecutors with crucial IT equipment
The EU Advisory Mission (EUAM) to Ukraine handed over laptops and other donated IT equipment to Ukraine’s Prosecutor General, Andrii Kostin, in Kyiv on 17 January. The equipment will support the daily work of the Office of the Prosecutor General (OPG) in time of war and improve the level of services provided to citizens.

The European Commission launched three new initiatives on 20 December 2023, boosting the EU’s research and innovation cooperation with Ukraine: a new Horizon Europe Office in Kyiv, a new European Innovation Council (EIC) action to support the Ukrainian deep tech community, and a new European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) Community Hub.

Large-scale hacker attack disrupts operations of the biggest Ukrainian mobile operator
Ukraine’s leading mobile phone provider, Kyivstar, suffered a large-scale hacker attack on 12 December 2023. With over 24.3 million clients, the company serves more than half the country’s population. Their loss of phone and internet connectivity is a serious issue in a country where many rely on mobile phones for air raid alerts. Within a week, all services were restored.

Eastern Partnership Foreign Affairs Ministerial meeting highlights digital
Connectivity, regional roaming and the digital transition were among the topics discussed in the Eastern Partnership (EaP) ministerial meeting on 11 December 2023. This event brought together foreign ministers of EU countries and their counterparts from five of the six Eastern partner countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine). The event provided an opportunity to exchange views on the Eastern Partnership, take stock of its achievements and identify concrete recommendations for the future of the policy.

House of Europe invites Ukrainian applications for ‘Digital labs’
The EU-funded ‘House of Europe’ programme invites Ukrainian exhibition curators, artists, tutors, city planners and urbanists to apply for its Digital Labs. This intensive programme of online courses provides opportunities to meet experts from Ukraine and the European Union and receive up to 500 EUR for professional development. The deadline for applications is 19 December 2023.

EU4Digital publishes Eastern Partnership start-up ecosystem report
EU4Digital Facility has published a study report that maps and diagnoses the start-up ecosystem in the Eastern Partnership (EaP). Produced by the EU4Digital ICT Innovation stream, the report defines the concept of high-performing incubation, presents analysis of the current situation and provides recommendations for the development of associated support programmes in the partner countries – Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Republic of Moldova and Ukraine. The report is available online and feedback is invited.

European Training Foundation’s 2024 plan prioritises digitalisation and Eastern partner countries
The European Training Foundation (ETF) helps countries around the European Union (EU) to reform their education, training and labour market systems. The 2024 work programme of this EU agency will promote digitalisation and innovation in education, with a focus on Ukraine and EU candidate countries including Georgia and Moldova, among other goals and focus points. This strategic plan was approved on 24 November 2023.
