Date: 29/05/23
A workshop on the digitalisation of the Armenian film industry with professional support from Amazon Web Services (AWS) will help boost the country’s creative industry and cultural heritage. The event on 22 March 2023 is part of the Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) EU-funded ‘Katapult’ programme and its goal to transform the creative economy into a key strategic sector for national and economic development.
The workshop brought together representatives from governmental, international, and private organisations, along with experts from Amazon Web Services. Gevorg Mantashyan, the First Deputy Minister of High-Tech Industry of the Republic of Armenia, and Marc Wierstra, the Manager of Global Accounts Public Sector & EMEA strategic initiatives at Amazon Web Services, delivered the opening speeches.
Gevorg Mantashyan expressed appreciation to AGBU for initiating the Katapult programme. He emphasised that Armenia has entered the phase of implementing its digitalisation strategy. This underscores the importance of modernising technological infrastructure to foster collaboration with various partners, including Amazon Web Services, thereby enhancing national competitiveness.
Marc Wierstra stated that the Amazon Web Services team possesses the ability to solve complex problems that may initially seem insurmountable. He highlighted the significance of cloud computing tools as one of the most advanced technologies of the modern era, and expressed enthusiasm for providing professional support to the digitalisation process.
Anna Gargaryan, head of the Katapult creative accelerator programme, also welcomed the event participants. She emphasised the urgent need to preserve cultural heritage for future generations and the role of digitalisation of the cultural sphere.
During the workshop, various aspects of utilising modern technologies in the digitisation and archiving of films were presented. Notably, with the assistance of the Amazon Web Services team, there are plans to digitise and restore old Armenian films stored in national archives, as well as those created by amateur filmmakers.
What is Katapult?
The three-year Katapult creative accelerator is designed to harness the collective intelligence of Armenia’s creative and cultural communities, including performing arts, sound recording, dance, theatre, opera, ballet, live music, cinema, and filmmaking. Visual arts encompass museums, photography, fine arts, graphic design, and other two-and-three dimensional art forms. Also included are digital and traditional publishing, as well as video game developing, retailing, advertising, architecture, radio broadcasting, TV programming and production as well as social media.
Katapult aims to empower creative professionals with education, entrepreneurial skills and visibility, and to bridge gaps in existing support services, technology, institutions and infrastructure to ensure a sustainable and thriving cultural industry.
Within the Katapult framework, an MoU was also signed between the Ministry of High-Tech Industry, the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports, the Ministry of Economy, the delegation of the European Union in Armenia and AGBU.
