Date: 17/01/24
Canada’s recently appointed Ambassador to Armenia expressed hope for deeper relations between the two countries in the field of information and telecommunication technologies during a meeting on 13 December 2023. Ambassador Andrew Turner met with Robert Khachatryan, Armenia’s Minister of High-Tech Industry, to discuss the challenges and opportunities for Canadian companies in Armenia.
Both parties share a commitment to bilateral cooperation, they concluded in the meeting. The aim is to strengthen ties and collaborative ventures between Armenia and Canada in the technology sector, and thus foster an environment for Canadian businesses to view Armenia as a potential partner. The ambassador hoped that the new Canadian embassy in Armenia will facilitate the development of such relations. The upcoming 2024 World Congress on Information Technology (WCIT) in Armenia and other industry-related events were also discussed, particularly with regard to opportunities for Canadian companies.
Khachatryan outlined the ministry’s core focus areas, which include information technology, digitalisation, cybersecurity, aerospace regulation and cultivating the start-up ecosystem. He emphasised that Armenia prioritises the high-tech sector’s development, implementing programmes geared toward its growth and collaboration with international partners. Armenia’s current technology initiatives include: the Engineering City programme, technology centres in Gyumri and Vanadzor, as well as the TUMO creative technology centre.
