Online marriage via Ukraine’s ‘Diia’ state app approved
Date: 25/04/24
The Ukrainian government has approved a resolution enabling citizens to marry via the ‘Diia’ state app as part of an experimental project. Many couples have had to postpone legalizing their relationships due to the inability to meet in person. The state registration of marriages will now be entirely conducted electronically, with online marriage being particularly beneficial for military personnel and couples separated by the ongoing conflict.
How will marriages through Diia work?
both the bride and groom will complete a marriage registration application via the Diia app;
the couples will be married via video link by an employee of the State Register of Acts of Civil Status (DRATS);
they will sign the deed of marriage using Diia.Signature.
Recently, the Diia portal introduced the option to apply for state marriage registration, allowing couples to select the place, time, format, and venue for their ceremony online. This meant that couples only needed to visit DRATS for the actual marriage registration. More than 22,000 Ukrainian couples have already utilised this service, and with the launch of this new feature, the entire marriage process will be digitalised. Online marriage not only simplifies the lives of Ukrainians but also sets an example of a socially conscious electronic service.
