Global Gateway Forum: EU announces EUR 10 million for Armenia’s education infrastructure
Date: 30/10/23
At the Global Gateway Forum on 25–26 October 2023 in Brussels, EU Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Olivér Várhelyi and the president of the European Investment Bank (EIB), Werner Hoyer, signed part of a financial package to improve education infrastructure in Armenia. The package will include a grant of EUR10 million provided by the European Commission through EIB Global.
The financed project encompasses the construction of two centres for extracurricular education and teacher training in the municipalities of Kapan and Goris in southern Armenia’s Syunik region. The centres will provide after-school educational opportunities and youth services for children aged 6-18. A special transport network will enable access for up to 6,000 students to learn subjects such as mechanics, programming, entrepreneurship, languages, arts, music and athletics.
The Global Gateway Forum brings together for the first time an assembly of government representatives from the European Union and across the globe, alongside key stakeholders and thought leaders from the private sector, civil society, financial institutions and international organisations to deliver on sustainable development goals.
The EU’s Global Gateway strategy embodies a ‘Team Europe’ approach that brings together the European Union, Member States and European development finance institutions. The strategy aims to reduce the gap in worldwide investment by boosting smart, clean and secure connections in digital, energy and transport sectors, and by strengthening systems in health, education and research. It intends to mobilise up to EUR 300 billion of public and private investment, from 2021 to 2027, to create essential links, promote independence and close the global investment gap.
