Ukraine partners with Palantir to automate demining processes with AI
Date: 23/04/24
The Ministry of Economyof Ukraine and Palantir, a company specialising in big data analytics, have signed a partnership agreement to improve the demining of Ukrainian territories. The AI-enhanced platform provided by Palantir will work with large-scale databases created by organisations involved in demining operations ranging from local governments, regional authorities, ministries and agencies to mine action operators.
The Palantir artificial intelligence platform (AIP) will conduct data analyses and provide recommendations for optimising the demining process. The platform will suggest the most effective strategy for clearing a particular area, whether through the use of novel demining methods employing drones or more conventional approaches. The goal is to demine territories faster and at lower cost. The provided databases will contain both static information such as an assessment of the economic efficiency of agricultural land, the proximity of contaminated areas to communications as well as dynamically updated operational information. This includes data from surveys of the territories collected by SES, SSTS, and non-governmental operators, the quantity and condition of equipment and the availability of explosive ordnance disposal units in specific areas.
The agreement was signed in London as part of a working visit to the UK by a Ukrainian delegation headed by Yuliia Svyrydenko, First Deputy Prime Minister of the Ministry of Economy.
Humanitarian demining is the zero stage of Ukraine’s recovery. At present, 156,000 square kilometres of land are potentially contaminated, and more than 6 million Ukrainians are at risk. That is why accelerating humanitarian demining, in particular through cooperation with technology companies such as Palantir, is an opportunity to save lives and speed up the reconstruction of Ukraine.
Yuliia Svyrydenko, First Deputy Prime Minister of the Ministry of Economy.
Louis Mosley, the Executive Vice President of Palantir for the UK and Europe, stressed that the agreement would help save lives and strengthen Ukraine’s economy.
Whether we are helping Ukraine’s brave defenders stand up to Putin’s aggression, supporting the resettlement of their loved ones, or assisting the country’s critical demining programme, Palantir stands with Ukraine and its people.
Louis Mosley, Palantir’s Executive Vice President for the UK and Europe
The agreement contains provisions for cooperation in the following areas:
digitalisation of humanitarian demining operations and automation of processes provided for by the National Mine Action Strategy for the period up to 2033;
expanding digital capabilities to coordinate land release and assessment, regional prioritisation and risk management in mine action;
use of a digital assistant based on the Palantir artificial intelligence platform (AIP) for decision-making in demining.
