EaPConnect partner ASNET-AM facilitates Armenia’s digitisation of cultural materials
Date: 26/01/24
In Armenia the digitisation of cultural materials such as books has been ongoing for around 20 years; now, thanks to collaboration within the EU4Digital: Connecting Research and Education Communities (EaPConnect) project, the national research and education network (NREN) ASNET-AM has gained exclusive rights to operate ‘dLibra’ in the country—a system that opens up a range of user-friendly possibilities for the preservation of cultural heritage.
Books, photos, musical scores, archival documents, videos, audio recordings and many other types of information are being digitised worldwide every day. This process helps to preserve these items as well as making them more visible and accessible. In Armenia, where libraries have been prioritising the preservation and display of digitised materials, the dLibra system allows the deployment of a digital library and/or the creation of a repository, characterised by a user-friendly interface, and offers a wide range of possible combinations.
The first and most successful user of dLibra in Armenia to date is the Pan-Armenian Digital Library which now contains more than 253,000 digital objects. This is technically maintained by a team from ASNET-AM with the umbrella support of colleagues from PSNC. Since its launch in 2019, the Pan-Armenian Digital Library has been consistently replenished with digital objects such as articles, books, newspapers, voice recordings and so on. It also contains scientific journals from the National Academy of Sciences as well as publications by some of its institutes, plus books and journals from the Viennese Mekhitarist Congregation’s collection and more. And the number of visitors is growing: in 2023 there were more than 2.5 million visits.
Looking to the future, ASNET-AM is optimistic about the continued success and expansion of dLibra’s usage across the country. The collaborative efforts between ASNET-AM and PSNC, exemplified by the dLibra implementation, are expected to further strengthen, contributing even more to Armenia’s ongoing digitisation initiatives.
