Georgia’s Communications Commission to address high telecoms services prices
Date: 21/03/24
A recent comparative analysis conducted by Georgia’s Communications Commission (ComCom) has revealed that telecommunications services prices are much higher in Georgia than in Europe. High-speed and high-volume internet services in Georgia are more expensive than their European counterparts, costing on average 136% more for home internet services and 35% more for mobile internet and voice packages. To address these price disparities, ComCom plans to implement changes aimed at providing Georgian consumers with the same affordable high-speed and high-volume telecoms services available in Europe.
The high prices for these services are a problem because of the rapidly increasing demand for mobile internet services which, on average, have reached usage levels of around 12 GB per user per month in 2022. The demand for high-speed internet services is also increasing among home users due to a surge in online activity and the use of various online services. The study has concluded that unless changes are made, Georgian consumers may have no option but to either choose low-speed and low-volume services or pay premium prices.
Interestingly, voice and data packages for low-volume mobile service subscribers are only 1% more expensive than in Europe. The study further revealed that for legal entity subscribers, prices vary drastically—some service packages are more expensive than their European counterparts while others are cheaper. The home internet market, however, shows consistently higher prices for high-speed internet access compared with those in European countries.
Very few families in Georgia have 100 MB/s internet access, likely due to the cost, which is 136% higher than the average price in Europe. In contrast, approximately 55% of families in European countries have high-speed internet connections. The situation for legal entity subscribers is also concerning, with 10 MB/s optical internet access costing almost three times as much as in Europe. Furthermore, the availability of high-volume optical internet in Georgia is limited. However, prices for combined internet and TV packages are comparatively lower than the European average.
