Young European Ambassadors organise hackathon on AI in society
Date: 24/01/24
Young European Ambassadors (YEA) helped organise the ‘Bridging the Gap’ hackathon on 13-14 January 2024, discussing and offering solutions to the biggest challenges related to artificial intelligence (AI). Participants developed ideas on the influence of AI on democracy, education, environment, and society as a whole.
In total, 14 mentors, 10 judges, and 130 participants from 12 different countries took part in the activity. Five Ukrainian and European Member State YEAs guided the participating teams. They developed ideas as part of two challenges – ‘Data Diplomats’ and ‘JS-Lab’. Winning solutions included displaying the ecological footprint of Large Language Models and a webpage showing how to protect yourself from scams that use audio generation tools.
The event was organised following the European Youth Hearing hosted by the European Parliament in November 2023. Ukrainian YEA Mariam Isoieva took a leading role in the hackathon’s organisation, in collaboration with the relevant European Youth Event (EYE) Ideas Booster and the Hasso Plattner Institute. The hackathon took place both online and in person at the Institute’s premises in Potsdam, Germany. AI HOUSE, the largest Ukrainian AI community, also provided support by identifying judges for the event.

The YEAs initiative was established in June 2016 as part of the ‘EU NEIGHBOURS East’ project and has involved more than 1,700 young people from over 30 different countries to date.
Organisers of the hackathon also used the opportunity to promote the charity initiative “AI for Ukraine”. Launched by AI HOUSE in 2022, it provides Ukrainian AI enthusiasts with access to the most relevant knowledge, unites and shares expertise with the international community, and raises funds to support Ukraine
