ITU and EaPeReg join forces to strengthen impact of ICT on sustainable development
Date: 20/05/20
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Eastern Partnership Electronic Communications Regulators Network (EaPeReg) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a high-level framework of cooperation in the area of information and communications technology (ICT) between the two organisations.
ITU is the United Nations specialised agency for information and communication technologies – ICTs. EaPeReg is an independent platform of National Regulatory Authorities for Electronic Communications Networks and Services of the Eastern partner countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine).
ITU and EaPeReg have common goals, like creating an enabling environment for telecommunications/ICT development, promoting investment and innovation in ICT infrastructures and services.
The purpose of the Memorandum is to establish a high-level, non-exclusive framework for mutual cooperation in the field of ICTs, as well as to create conditions for the development of this co-operation, including through:
sharing reports, guidelines, best regulatory practices and case studies on relevant topics;
participating in relevant meetings, including the Global Symposium for Regulators (GSR), Regional Regulatory Fora, Regional Economic Dialogues, ITU Study Groups and Focus Groups, Thematic Workshops and meetings of the expert working groups;
undertaking joint actions such as thematic meetings, capacity building workshops as well as knowledge sharing and exchanges.
Digital transformation and the SDGs
The agreement will also strengthen the implementation of the ITU Regional Initiatives for Europe and the CIS, aiming to foster an enabling policy and regulatory environment conducive to sustainable telecommunication/ICT development.
Sharing experiences and building national capacities based on international experiences can also help drive the digital transformation needed to accelerate the achievement of UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Collaborative, cross-sector regulation is the best and quickest way to leverage digital transformation, and deliver meaningful connectivity and inclusive digital markets.
The European Union’s EU4Digital initiative works together with EaPeReg, supporting efforts to achieve a common roaming space among Eastern Partner countries by 2020, to strengthen the independence of National Regulatory Authorities, and to develop coordinated strategies for frequency distribution.
